Rancho Mirage, CA - Travel and Things To Do

Rancho Mirage is a resort city in California and has been a vacation spot for various U.S. Presidents such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. It has also been very popular with the rich and famous such as, to name a few, Frank Sinatra and Queen Elizabeth II.

Most of the hotels here are dedicated to golfers since this place boasts over twelve golf courses (country clubs). Apart from golfing, another major attraction is the casinos. The most popular casino among tourists is the Agua Caliente Casino. The charm of this city is to enjoy the warm hospitality that is meted out by the hotels, play golf, and gamble. It's a very relaxing experience and every different resort leaves you with a different experience altogether.

Here is a list of the popular resorts/hotels and what they have to offer:

Desert Springs-J W Marriott resort and spa: This resort has to be booked in advance at least 2 months before your arrival date. It is extremely popular among tourists and in fact, even the locals stay here over weekends to relax. Even if you might not have a chance to stay here, it's worth a peek. The lobby is a shaded marble and a 60 foot bar with a scenic background of cascading waterfalls. The rooms are not as you would have pictured them after seeing the lobby but they are comfortable. Guests come here for golf, tennis, and the full service spa facility provided. The resort is very picturesque with two gondolas which take you around for a view of the lush green gardens and the Venetian inspired waterways.

Weston Mill Hill resorts : This place is designed to resemble a Moroccan palace surrounded by pools and waterfalls and lush green gardens. All the rooms are provided with terraces. Guests staying here can avail themselves of the golf facilities and visit the popular nearby Agua Caliente Casino which is a walkable distance from the resort. If you are with children, this is the best place for you to stay. For children below age 17 it's free to stay with their parents. Various activities are provided for the children to ensure they remain engaged and interested, such as bikes, children's activity center, and heated swimming pools. You may leave your kids alone and go enjoy yourself care free.

Ranchos Las Palmas resort and spa: one of the most luxurious hotels in the area. It includes a world-class health spa. Each room has an adjoining balcony and the overall theme of this resort is of a Spanish hacienda. It has a newly opened aquatic adventure called Splashotopia which is fun for both adults and kids.

A La Quinta Bed and Breakfast: this bed and breakfast hideaway boasts 800 rooms. It has a hidden secret lake and Norman style rooms. Each room is different here. It has on-site facials and massage and is wi-fi enabled. You may go there to enjoy a more relaxing and intimate experience.

There are many restaurants here for dining out, but a few of the good ones are:

Europa Restaurant and the French Palms. These are a little more expensive than the others. French Palms offers Mediterranean and French cuisine. The dining area is located by the poolside. Specialities include the grilled lamb, tuna steak, tiramisu and the raspberry soda shooter. Europa Restaurant is equally good. It has a European architecture. Specialities are the salmon baked in parchment with creme and dill, and fillet mignon on a bed of crispy onions topped with garlic butter. Do not miss out on the signature chocolate mousse.

The inexpensive restaurants here are Davey's Hideaway, Murph's Gaslight, and Sherman's Deli and Bakery. Louise's Pantry is a good coffee shop and a diner. Palmie has good French cuisine.

Besides relaxing and enjoying the cuisine, you will find plenty of activities in and about Rancho Mirage. Now and then a new disco opens up in the Springs. There are theaters for performing arts and the Plaza Theater with a cast of retired showgirls, singers and comedians. You can visit one of these for a fun-filled and delightful evening.

Rock climbing: the national park here has emerged as one of the state's premier rock climbing destinations, from the hidden valley to the wonderland of rocks.

Anza Borrego Desert State Park: this desert is home to fossils and rocks dating from as long as 540 million years ago. The way to this park itself is a roller coaster ride as you ride down the steep slopes. It is a very scenic place and if you go here, a camera is a must-have, but do remember that it gets extremely hot during summers with temperatures reaching to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.

I would suggest that you spend at least 3-4 days in Rancho Mirage and environs. Enjoy the mountains, the spas, golf, rock climbing. Your stay there is surely going to be an intimate and adventurous experience. You may be spoiled by the luxury! People here are also very friendly and of a helpful nature.
