Huntington Beach Historical Society Events and Lectures

Written by Chris MacDonald

Huntington Beach, CA -- More than 35 people came to The Huntington Beach Historical Society meeting July 13th in the Newland Barn to hear what is going on with the Society (like a garden restoration project of the Newland House), and to hear Historian Craig MacDonald, give a fascinating presentation on Amazing Women who changed society in Huntington Beach and nationally.

The fascinating talk was videotaped by former HB TV-3 & PBS director/producer Greg Furlong, who's developing it into a show and part of a potential historical TV series.

One of the Women featured was in the audience-- Leslie Gilson, who helped restore HB's Gibbs Butterfly Park (near Graham, across from the Meadowlark Golf Course). As a result of her passion for the park and its Monarchs, she has brought people together to insure the beautiful butterflies can still stop at Gibbs Park during their annual migration. Read about more Huntington Beach Women featured in the presentation.

Other distinguished guests included Dr. Kay Goddard, President of Friends Of Shipley Nature Center, Lance Martin, a great Cartoonist & author of the new book, "The Little Hermit," Dr. Michael Kaplan, a noted HB Opthamalogist, his wife and a friend; Joanne and Anthony Ursano, and internationally known painter Bill Anderson, a HB resident and owner of Anderson Art Gallery in Sunset Beach) and his wife Ausma.

The Historical Society welcomes everyone to come to the free CIVIL WAR DAYS each Labor Day Weekend in HB Central Park (behind the library off of Gothard, between Slater & Talbert). You'll see "Living History, Weapons Demonstrations, Battles, Church Services and a whole lot more. It's educational and entertaining as participants are in period uniforms and outfits.
