Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival

June 4-6, 2010

22 wineries have signed up to date for the most popular outdoor event in Temecula held in June. The Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival started with 6 wineries--and now has 22. But wine sampling is only one attraction that brings guests to the valley and to this event.

Location: Lake Skinner address is 37701 Warren Rd., Winchester, CA 92596. This is just outside Temecula in a small town, so you'll want to book your hotels in Temecula, itself.

Area wineries joined force with the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce and a few hot air balloonists to create the first festival and showcase the Temecula Valley viticulture area that has flourished. There are 38 wineries in and around the Temecula Valley with more in various stages of development. 25 of them belong to the Temecula Valley Wine Growers Association.

Another group known as the DePortola Wine Trail – are located on or near DePortola Road. To add to the mix there are wineries without tasting rooms that are part of the “Collective” in Old Town Temecula. And, there are wineries in the process of developing their wine country tasting rooms that have opened tasting rooms in Old Town Temecula. The Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival provides the perfect venue for discovering a new favorite with 22 wineries pouring at the Festival in the wine gardens and an additional three pouring in the food and wine pairing venue Saturday and Sunday.

The participants had their wines screened by a panel of winemakers in a blind selection process assuring top quality wines in the wine gardens. A Gold Medal wine judging is also part of the Festival with blind tasting of the wines submitted by the various vintners. Results of the judging will be released after May 20, 2010. Finding the perfect cuisine to go with a favorite wine will be easy for a select few guests at the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival.

Wine and Food pairing is offered as a gourmet dining option at the Festival Saturday and Sunday. The venue features three courses prepared by local executive chefs and paired with Temecula’s award winning wines.

There are two seatings on Saturday and one on Sunday for a gourmet treat that always sells out. Chefs demonstrating their art and providing delectable cuisine are from Ravioli’s, Rustico, Gourmet Italia, Frankie’s Stake and Seafood, D’Canters and the Edge. Wines from Wiens, Frangipani, Stuart Cellars, Briar Rose, Boorman Winery and Atwood Winery will be paired with one of the courses during the event.

Carol Popejoy, executive director of the festival said they created an event-within-the-event four years ago for the more serious epicurean. Some of the wineries pouring in the Wine & Food Pairing pavilion are boutique wineries that do not usually pour at the Festival.

Producing smaller quantities of cases, these wineries offer unique premium wine experiences in intimate settings. Wineries pairing in the Pavilion and not sampling in the wine gardens are Boorman, Frangipani and Atwood.

Wineries participating in both the pairing and sampling in the wine gardens are Briar Rose, Stuart Cellars, Wiens Family Cellars, and Thornton Winery. Saturday seating tames are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $72 per person. Sunday seating is $65 per person, and includes food from Frankie’s Steak & Seafood, Rustico and D’Canters Bar &Grill.

Wineries paired with Sunday’s selection are Briar Rose Winery, Attwood Winery, and Boorman Vineyards. Wine tasting in the wine gardens offers guests a chance to sample from over 22 wineries. For $15 guests get six tastes and a souvenir glass. They may also buy wines by the glass.
