Stockton Chinese and Vietnamese Annual New Year Parade, California

March 6, 2010 Downtown Stockton

The annual Stockton parade that celebrates the Chinese New Year is held annually in downtown Stockton. With awards for best float, best marching band and most spirited youth group, this community event celebrates the cultural heritage of California and Stocktonn's diverse populations with a parade that includes festive costumes, dragon dancers and brilliant color.  stocktonchinese.org

Sponsored by Chinese Benevolent Association-Confucius Church of Stockton in association with PG&E, the parade route is about a mile and a half long beginning at  Sutter & Washington and ending on Lafayette Street. Each year this event celebrates the Chinese New Year and its "Year of..." theme.  In 2010 the parade was in its 8th year of existence celebrating the Year of the Tiger. Operated by a nonprofit organization, donations are accepted to help make the parade possible.

While this parade blends several cultures and their celebrations of the Chinese New Year, the parade is not held exactly on the day of the Chinese New Year, though it does honor the costumes and traditions. Other parades in California that celebrate the Chinese New Year include the big parade in San Francisco, a celebration in Garden Grove, and many more throughout California. Where to stay: When visiting Stockton, our favorite hotels for this event include: Lexington Plaza Waterfront Hotel is a nice place to stay and well-located to everything. Another popular choice that we've not tried is the affordable Best Western Stockton Inn.
