San Diego's City Ballet The Nutcracker Performance Information

previous < California Nutcrackers > next

The City Ballet of San Diego offers one of the longest Nutcracker ballet schedules in California. Featuring an all star cast of dancers. Celebrating over 15 years as  world-class professional ballet company, there's no question that the exciting Nutcracker performance proves this ballet company worthy of accolades that include consideration as a "top-tier" dance company.  Former Boston Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet dancers Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich create a production fashioned after the choreography of the great Russian master, Lev Ivanov. Opulent sets and costumes, talented young dancers from the City Ballet School, the City Ballet Orchestra under the baton of John Nettles, and choreography from the famous duo set this ballet presentation apart from so many Nutcrackers you may have seen.

With costume design by David Heuvel, scenery by  San Diego Opera Scenic Studios, and lighting design by Stephen Judson, the intricate details of this San Diego company's production offer a rich tapestry and evening of entertainment filled with color, lights, sounds, fantasy and astounding precision in dance. City Ballet of San Diego's production has repeatedly been an award-winner through recent years, and this year promises not to disappoint. San Diego's Best Nutcracker, according to the Tommy Dance Award, is testimony to the talent that this particular show offers.

While the ballet company & school was founded in 1992, Steven Wistrich has directed City Ballet School and Company for all but one year of the school's existence. Training as a ballet dancer first at Boston School of Ballet with E. Virginia Williams he received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to the School of American Ballet in New York and the young age of 16. He became Boston Ballet's youngest principal male dancer. In fact, he was personally coached by the late George Balanchine in principal roles at the Grand Theatre of Geneva, Switzerland. As former principal dancer and artistic director of the American Festival Ballet company, he also has directed at Interlochen Arts Academy.

Not alone in his talent, Steven is joined by Elizabeth Wistrich, the co-Director of City Ballet School, and choreographer extraordinaire.  Trained at the Boston Conservatory of Music, she danced professionally as a member of the Boston Ballet Company. Touring the globe from Western Europe to Australia and Japan, Elizabeth Wistrich has enjoyed a command performance at England's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Her talents are vast, as she has enjoyed not only a stellar career as a performer, but has been recognized for her choreography, as well.

Dance artists with their roots in California have included Julie Avanzino of Mountain View, California, who trained at the school of Ballet San Jose. Also training at that school is Ivan Bielik of Slovakia. With far too many credits and training to mention, the City Ballet includes great talents such as Gerardo Gil, Kevin Engle, Emily Kirn, Ariana Samuelsson, Tara Formanek, Alexis Risi, Taurean Green, Yasuyo Morimoto, Marissa Notario, Daniel Salvador, Shannon Stobbe and Janica Smith.
