Additional Notes

Spring is coming, and so is the Sacramento County Fair! Held annually at the end of May at the Cal Expo in Sacramento, this is one of the longest running, family friendly events in California. The Midway and Main Carnival include over 50 rides, with 10 rides dedicated to kids 3 to 7 years old at the Kids' Carnival! The Main Stage and the Ford Community Stage are a setting for local talent including singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, actors. Just step onstage, move into the lights, walk up to the microphone and go for it. The Sunflower Saddle Ranch and the Metro Farm provide fun and educational programs and exhibits. Enjoy harness racing, kitchen exhibits and demos, arts and crafts, and so much more.

The traditional options like livestock, garden, music, and food exhibits or contests are must-sees, but be sure to check out special events. Each year comes with a new theme, to showcase new and unique experiences. Check your local paper, the fairs' website, local TV/radio/newspaper, or social networking page for the current year's information.

A county fair's tradition of partnering with 4-H, FFA, science, art and other educational programs is legend, and the Sacramento County Fair continues this effort. Hundreds of students are given opportunities to shine as they display their skills, learning to compete with others, building confidence as they strive for the Blue Ribbon or even a chance for scholarships. And did you know you could actually buy that Blue Ribbon bunny or goat or cow at the Junior Livestock Auction?!

Visitors with special needs might take advantage of conveniences such as wheelchair and stroller rentals, and wheelchair charging stations. The Sacramento County Fair is a Smoke-Free area, but for those who can't do without their ciggies, there is a designated smoking area just outside the fair entrance. A food court and conveniently located restrooms are within the fair.

Every little kid should experience a day at the fair as a rite of passage. Ride the merry-go-round, the ferris wheel, or the roller coaster. Get some cotton candy or funnel cake or popcorn or candy apple. Win a prize at coin, ring or ball pitching. See or pet or ride the animals. Experience the colors, sounds, the flavors, the feelings of excitement and yes, those aromas, which will forever after evoke fond memories when they smell them anywhere in the world.
