Los Angeles County Fair Calendar Pomona California Sept. 4 - Oct. 3, 2010

LA County Fair Location: Fairplex, 1101 W McKinley Ave, Pomona, CA 91768

Los Angeles--LA County Fair gets poked at quite a bit. In fact, the fair organizers and advertising agencies do a "fair" amount of poking fun at themselves. Ads in recent years have shown totally blonde women and girls questioning the food groups and origination of food items such as hot dogs and cotton candy. The stereotypical spoiled LA woman who spends more time with a plastic surgeon than outdoors in the environs of barns filled with pigs, hogs, cows, sheep and agricultural products is a demographic the Los Angeles County Fair reaches, in fact. Why? L.A. is a concrete jungle and few opportunities are afforded city residents and beach dwellers to see other aspects of nature.

Los Angeles County Fair is the largest county fair in the world..  Held at the Fairplex in Pomona, the grounds are humongous, and include thoroughbred racing during the fair's three week run. 10,000 people are employed annually by the fair enterprise, 2,000 vendors serve food and beverages, nearly 1.5 million people attend the fair each year, and it all happens in just 17 days in which the LA County Fair is open.

What's the big deal? LA County Fair is the granddaddy of fairs, to be honest. While there's not a lot in the surroundings that resemble a countryside setting, the Fair serves up the trappings of farm life, agriculture, thrill rides and food that Southern California residents don't see most the year.

While the admission fee is a bit higher than your average fair (adults are over $15), the value includes a full day of fun, entertaining acts, tons of food snacking opportunities, and great exercise, being on your feet and shuffling to the beat of this annual event that adults and kids can sink their teeth into.

Musical acts include acts such as Doobie Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad, Smoky Robinson, KC and the Sunshine Band, the Bangles, Jessica Simpson, Mariachi USA Fiesta and Monster Truck Madness.

Summary: California fairs offer great entertainment, affordable entry fees and family bonding opportunities. With over 50 counties in California, that means a whole lot of fair hopping around the state. Get busy checking them out...but they mostly last in the summer months from around May to November. Then they kind of disappear till spring comes around.

Where to stay: Sheraton Fairplex is the closest, nice hotel you'll find. There are many business class hotels in Pomona, ideal for couples, singles and families.
