Additional Notes

As autumn settles over central California, bringing with it warm days and crisp, cool nights, there are few better ways to spend a long weekend than attending the Desert Empire Fair in Ridgecrest. For four days in October, the Ridgecrest Fairgrounds become the biggest attraction for miles around as the annual fair begins.

As one nears the entrance of the Desert Empire Fair, the first thing one sees are the tops of the carnival rides that dot the fairgrounds. There are rides for children as young as two as well as more extreme rides that are sure to draw out plenty of screams as they spin, shudder and roll. Best of all, unlike some fairs that can cost families a fortune, the Desert Empire Fair is one of the best values in California with no admission costing more than a few dollars.

Once one enters the Desert Empire Fair, one of the first stops should be the food pavilion, where over twenty different types of local and international food and drinks are served. Since it's the fair, having a little too much to eat is part of the experience. After gorging on all that food, work it off by taking a leisurely stroll through the shopping area where local artisans sell everything from art to pottery to hand-carved wooden knick-knacks to jewelry to home-made tools and toys.

Of course, one of the best things about a county are the musical performances that come free with the price of admission. At the Desert Empire Fair, there are three separate stages that offer entertainment. The Children's Stage features performances specifically geared to the tastes of the kids in the family while the Sage Hall Stage features new and upcoming acts that are targeted at a slightly older, but still young demographic. The biggest acts, though, perform at the Main Stage so be sure to arrive early to get a good spot.
