Additional Notes

Chowchilla-Madera County Fair is a delightful joy and always surprising event to take part in. Celebrating the vitality and sheer exuberance of country life, this notoriously friendly rural festival takes place every year, during the third weekend of May. You will taste to the fullest the simple pleasures of life: traditional good food and beverages to quench your thirst, rustic scenery, farm animals of choice, stimulating music selections, all topped by the Spring Festival Parade as a true feast for the eyes when the whole nature bursts into full bloom.

Down the central Robertson Boulevard in Chowchilla, parade-goers will be thrilled to see proud, jubilant participants from local schools, churches, entrepreneurs, clubs and even the City Council. The whole community blossoms and comes down to the parade route to give vent to contagious enthusiasm. Queens and their glamorous courts can be admired, as can avant-garde to awesome allegorical carts and classic cars. The parade is also a military event, on the occasion of the Armed Forces Day. As such, military vehicles and arms complete the triumphant march of soldiers and policemen dressed in their best uniform, all in the celebration music ensured by marching bands. As recognition for their creativity and efforts, the best prepared parade participants receive awards and parade trophies.

The most cherished and delicious tradition is certainly the Chowchilla Fair Deep Pit Barbecue. With everyone hungry after the traditional parade, this hugely popular barbecue brings together 6000 people, 9000 pounds of meat, plus matching salad and side-dish, in a cozy, shaded picnic area where they can chat at ease. The reigning queen is crowned, as acknowledgement for the person who sold the most tickets to the barbecue and who will diligently promote next year's Fair.

Moreover, fair goers are attracted by livestock exhibitions of large and small animals (beef, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, swine, rabbits, and avian breeds), dog and horse showmanship, animal auction market, as well as a floriculture contest. A beauty pageant is also available for young girls endowed with charm and grace. All in all, the Fair emphasizes the very essence of rural life, with both great challenges and sublime beauty; it provides a precious glimpse into a world struggling to keep a valuable cultural heritage and a traditional way of life.
