                  OnCourse Review by Lorne Rubenstein.

The powers-that-be are charging a small fortune to play this stunning
course by Carmel Bay, and the not so powerful are paying the freight. To
play Pebble, it seems, is a once a year or once in a lifetime treat for golfers,
and who can blame them? It really is a paradise, as Ray March knew when
writing his book A Paradise Called Pebble Beach.

How can a golfer resist playing a course where so much has happened? I
remember Jack Nicklaus slamming a one-iron against the flag on the 17th
hole the last day of the 1972 U.S. Open on his way to winning, and then, in
1982, Tom Watson''s dramatic chip-in on the same hole to beat Nicklaus.
Ten years later Tom Kite played a course as firm as the roads into the
storied layout, and in high winds. No matter, he holed out from 25 yards on
the seventh hole in a gale and went on to win that U.S. Open, his first
                  major victory.

Each year when it''s time for the Crosby--excuse me, the AT&T National
Pro-Am, I''m ready to sit by the television hour after hour and watch the
tour players and the celebs play the paradise. Let the winds blow and let it
be cold; or let it be calm and the weather sunny and warm. It doesn''t
matter to me, because this is Pebble, one of golf''s beautiful places. If
there''s a better or more lovely finishing hole than the par-five 18th that
winds around the bay, I''d like to know about it. Pebble is something else
all right. Thank you Messrs. Grant and Neville. And thank you again.
