Cathedral City, CA - Travel and Things To Do

Cathedral City, California resides almost at the midpoint between the more established resort cities of Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. It is one of eight cities comprising the Coachella Valley. Much like its other desert neighbors, Cathedral City is a small, relaxed town well-appointed with golf courses and swimming pools.

Avid golfers will find several excellent public courses to play at in Cathedral City. There are three different courses at the Cathedral Canyon Golf and Tennis Club, three at the Desert Princess Country Club, two at the Cimarron Golf Club, two at Outdoor Resorts and one at the Date Palm Country Club.

If golf isn't your sport, Cathedral City also boasts a Big League Dreams Sports Park. This amazing monument to America's past-time not only hosts the city's various softball leagues, but also features replica stadiums of three of the most recognizable parks in the Major Leagues. Near-perfect reproductions of Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park and Wrigley Field populate the complex.

There are also soccer fields, batting cages and a children's playground in the facility. When your family finishes playing ball for the day, you can all relax at the Big League Dreams' Stadium Club and enjoy traditional ballpark fare like burgers and hot dogs.

If you prefer something less taxing on the body, Canyon Adventures offers fishing tours to the Whitewater Canyon Hatchery. Anglers can not only hook their own fish there, but cook them up after catching them.

If sightseeing is what you have in mind, Cathedral City offers two sterling sites that you should visit. The massive Fountain of Life statue resides in downtown Cathedral City. Artist Jennifer Johnson and architect Reuel Young carved the sprawling statue out of adoquin stone from Jalisco, Mexico, taking more than a year to assemble it. It is a symbol of desert life, adorned with likenesses of all the various forms of life which populate the surrounding landscape. Carvings of big horn sheep, lizards, wildflowers, birds and countless other denizens of the desert surround three huge central columns.

Those interested in old Hollywood will find two cemeteries where many celebrities of old have found their final resting places. Interred at the Forest Lawn - Cathedral City Cemetery and Desert Memorial Park are such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Sonny Bono, Dinah Shore, Busby Berkeley and many others.

Lodging in Cathedral City is available at the many country clubs noted above in the section on golf courses. Budget travelers will also find many recognizable and affordable options such as Holiday Inn Express, Quality Inn and Travelodge.

Because of its high volume of tourists, Cathedral City features many fine restaurants of varying cuisines. Tooties Texas BBQ, Oceans Seafood, El Gallito Restaurant, India Oven and Sunshine Cafe are among the highest rated eateries by travelers.

The climate in Cathedral City is common to the deserts of Southern California. Summer temperatures often climb above a hundred degrees while winters are typically much cooler than nearby Los Angeles. Rain seldom falls in the Coachella Valley, but when it does flash flooding often follows.

Traveling to Cathedral City is a fairly simple process as it resides close to Palm Springs International Airport. Other nearby airports are Los Angeles International Airport and Ontario International Airport.
