Calistoga, CA - Travel and Things To Do

Calistoga California is situated in the northern part of Napa Valley, just a few miles from larger Santa Rosa. It is a quaint town with a small population. With only a few roads going through town the area has been left largely immune to the massive buildups that have spoiled other scenic towns. Calistoga is a friendly destination for families with kids of all ages, large parties, or a romantic getaway for two. There are a number of attractions that will satiate any appetite, from wine tours to dips in their plush spas brimming with natural hot spring mineral waters.

The best times to head out to Calistoga seem to be fall or spring time. The summers can get rather hot since Calistoga is a bit farther away from the San Fransisco Bay than the rest of the Valley.

If you are looking to tour some wineries, then Calistoga should be a stop. There are fifteen distinct wine growing regions within Napa Valley. Each offers a different flavor and body in their wines. The Calistoga area is known for the unique mineral content and heavy volcanic body in the soil. The main types of grapes cultivated in Calistoga include Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are over thirty different wineries in the Calistoga area which makes it an excellent home base for a winery tour.

However, if you're up for a break from the wine grind, then you can check out what Calistoga is really famous for: its spas. Before wine came to Napa Valley, Calistoga was famous for its mineral springs. There are many spas that boast mud baths, hot springs, and massages. You can go for the day or spend a relaxing weekend at the spa.

Most prefer a dip in the volcanic mud baths before getting a relaxing message. The minerals in the mud combined with the heat from the springs are supposed to loosen up the body and rejuvenate the skin before the massage. Then, when the muscles are nice and loose from the hot spring they can be manipulated by the artful hands of a skilled masseuse.

When you're tired from relaxing in the mud baths, you can take a nature walk along one of the many trails in the area and go check out the towns own version of "Old Faithful". It is a natural geyser outside of town which erupts with a similar frequency to its namesake in Yellowstone National Park.

Calistoga is also known for its vibrant night life. It is easy to find live music coming from any number of restaurants or pubs downtown. You can sample some local microbrews or local wines in any of the restaurants. Every March, Calistoga hosts a Jazz festival, and every Thursday during the summer the county fair holds concerts in their Pioneer Park.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing weekend at a spa, a group tour of local wineries, or music for all ages, Calistoga is the place to be in Napa Valley.
