The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum Outdoor Shakespeare Plays and New Works
 

A beautiful outdoor theater in Topanga Canyon offers a wonderful theatrical setting for a variety of plays that include Shakespeare summer favorites, and some free special performances. Advised to dress warmly as the theater is outdoors  and, in case of inclement weather, please call for alternate performance times.

 

Who is Will Geer? Will Geer was one of the many actors victimized by the McCarthy Era Blacklisting. He opened a theatre for Blacklisted actors and folk singers on his Topanga property back in the 1950's, creating a legacy remembered today.

 

A 299-seat outdoor amphitheatre is one of the few mid-size union houses in the L.A. area, receiving critical praise and numerous awards. An educational outreach program, Classroom Enrichment, takes the Theatricum's actor/teachers into the classroom, allowing students to interact with historic characters.

 

Natural aesthetics the theatre mainstage amphitheater enhances the venue’s comfort and accessibility. Theatricum has expanded the Botanicum grounds by purchasing an additional piece of property southwest of the amphitheatre. This expansion enlarges the theatre’s park-like setting available to the community. In addition, new spaces for classes and workshops allowing Theatricum to serve an increased number of students through its educational programs in the years to come.

 

In 2002, Botanicum Seedlings: A Development Series for Playwrights was created to foster the growth of unproven plays and emerging artistic voices. Botanicum Seedlings hosts public readings and workshops in the summer, as well as during the "off season" as a means to keep company members challenged and artistically vital.

Save Love Canal by Molly Best Tinsley, directed by Katherine James - A drama with dark, comic undertones about growing up and growing apart, and all that comes after. Upon the sudden death of her estranged twin brother, a single mother revisits their childhood as a "military brat" and reexamines some contested memories.

Territory of Dreams by Velina Hasu Houston, directed by Luis Alfaro - A humorous and touching new play about origins, paths, and staking claims that's not afraid to go uncomfortable places. At its center are four women from diverse racial and economic backgrounds, each caught up in the business of prejudice.
