SONOMA, CALIFORNIA Photos & Information

The name Sonoma may be a Mayakmah word for town, noma.

Blue collar meets blueblood in the Wine Country. Every time someone I know (including myself) arrives in the Northern California wine country regions of Napa or Sonoma, we dare to get out on foot, walking, and observe the incredible contrasts.

When you sit on your computer at home and plot out the most expensive meals served at the likes of French Laundry, the images conjured up are of extreme wealth, opulence and snooty people. Who pays over $150 per person per dinner in a remote destination?

But further examination after arrival shows day laborers in blue jeans standing by the side of the road hoping for some work. And big Chevy trucks zipping by at a maddening pace.

Not exactly what you'd expect and seldom painted in real light on the Internet, the memory came back today as I spoke to a reporter who was out walking around Sonoma and mirrored my exact thoughts about this situation.

For those who want to taste the wine, Sonoma County has over 40 wineries that include names such as Kenwood, Ravenswood, Sebastiani, Domaine Carneros and Chateau St. Jean. To accompany the great wines, chefs concoct fabulous meals with a variety of ethnic spices and flavors.  Restaurants include Mexican, Italian, Thai, Himalayan, French and most feature flavors that will not be found elsewhere, courtesy of world class chefs.

Located 45 minutes north of San Francisco, Sonoma enjoys warmer, sunnier climate and cool nights, especially in the winter. Flights into Oakland Airport or San Francisco Airport with shuttle service or car rental are a great way to get to wine region. If driving, don't miss the beautiful countryside and coastline of Sonoma County. It is approximately an hour to 90 minutes west of Sonoma but well worth a day trip when visiting.
