California Weather Trends

Tourists from Japan clung to their jackets at Huntington Library & Gardens in San Marino when the temperature in Southern California hovered in the low 60s. At the beach, it was even cooler. At a street fair in Huntington Beach the merchants packed up their wares and left the fair early as cold air and a sandstorm blew through the first block of Main Street near the Huntington Beach Pier.

What a difference a week makes!

Now Los Angeles is setting records in a heat wave that has tourist scrambling to buy sunblock and tank tops. Up and down the coast of California from San Diego to Monterey the temperatures are well above average and even set records in Los Angeles yesterday.

Cool beaches include water temperatures ranging from 61 degrees to 55 currently, while the air temperature peaked around 100.

In Seal Beach, the tennis courts that are normally "waiting line only" on a Monday afternoon were nearly empty today, due most likely to the heat. Although the temperature at this Orange County beach was only in the upper 80's, it felt unseasonably hot and had folks scrambling for their fans, water, and air conditioning. The temperatures are predicted to begin dropping Tuesday.
