Anaheim hotels generally offer great values, some of the best in all of Southern California, in fact. Competition of great rooms is tough and the hotels have geared themselves to offering value, room size and amenities, plus locations near the resort for those seeking to park and walk to Disneyland and California Adventure.

We've visited and actually tried the three main Disneyland hotels recently. Of course our favorite of three is Disney's Grand Californian. It is a AAA Four Diamond Resort Hotel with new Craftsman style decor and a private entrance to the California Adventure theme park offering early admission for those staying at the hotel with tickets.

Our second favorite hotel is Disneyland Hotel, the original Disneyland property. We like it because you can still open your window to get fresh air. At Disney's Paradise Pier, we smelled cigarette smoke in the vents and the air was too hot. But we could not open a sealed window to air the place out.

Popular among tourists is Candy Cane Inn. This viewer's choice is on the same side of the street and directly outside the fence to Disneyland Park. The management keeps a clean ship, garnering a 3 Diamond ranking. Price value and location make this Anaheim hotel one of the local favorites.

For conventions, pick one of the hotels across Katella Boulevard. At the Anaheim Convention Center are two great hotels, the Anaheim Marriott and the Hilton Anaheim and Towers. We've stayed at both and like them for their decor and amenities.  Hilton offered a lower price twice when we booked. It also featured a Starbucks Coffee kiosk in the lobby, which we went over to when staying at Marriott across the street.  The decor at the Hilton was simpler but we were quite happy with the accommodations. Marriott is often the preferred choice for conventions because many of the meetings and break out sessions in conferences we've attended are held right at the hotel. We attended one function where nearly 3,000 people were served a dinner. The large catering and banquet facilities at the Marriott make it a popular events and wedding venue.

Some people either drive to Anaheim / Disneyland or rent a car and do not require transportation (available throughout Anaheim). For those with the ability to drive, there are some really new, exciting hotel choices just beyond the extended arm of Anaheim in Garden Grove. Several utilize names that include Anaheim, making it sound as if they are located in the city. Be sure to check the city your hotel of choice is in.  We spoke with guests at several of the new Garden Grove hotels and they were absolutely satisfied with their lodgings. They either had to drive to the parking garage at Disneyland and pay for day parking or hop on a bus and pay a small fee (usually less than a $1.50 per person each way) for a trip just a mile or two away in front of Disneyland.

While prices is everything in Anaheim, guests also want to visit the beach. They ask often which beaches are the closest to the theme park. Long Beach Seaport Marina is the closest and Seal Beach comes in second, however, with Long Beach taking only approximately 18 minutes to arrive at. Newport Beach and Huntington Beach are both around 19 miles but because of the freeway system, Newport Beach, provides beach access usually within  24 minutes. Popular Laguna Beach is a bit farther but is nearly the same driving time as Huntington Beach, taking around 31 minutes to reach. And here's a surprise! Dana Point, the furthest beach south can be reached in the same amount of time as Huntington because of its location near the Santa Ana / San Diego 5 Freeway.

Hotels directly on the beach are available in cities such as Dana Point, Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. Other cities feature hotels across the street from a beach. On-the beach hotels include Dana Point's The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, Laguna Beach's Surf & Sand, Capri Laguna Inn On The Beach, Inn at Laguna Beach, Montage Resort & Spa Laguna Beach and Surf & Sand Resort.  Newport Beach's Balboa Bay Club & Resort, Balboa Inn,Newport Dunes Resort and Portofino Beach Hotel are all on the beach.

Visiting Anaheim

Around 15 million guests per year visit the city (with approximately 13 million of them attending Disneyland.) It outshines every other theme park in California with over double the attendance of the next contender, Universal Studios. Who could have known such success was to come? And as the city learned, maintaining a balance between the quality of life for local residents and providing the environment to attract tourists is a formula subject to many changes. Wrecking balls and construction zones have been part of the landscape for several years. Recent announcements of approval for Disney's third theme park means construction will likely continue.

If getting there is a concern, a trip to Disneyland is very easy with Amtrak train station only 10 minutes away. Airport Bus takes passengers to and from Los Angeles International Airport on daily scheduled trips and tour buses depart major Anaheim hotels daily for excursions to Los Angeles attractions such as Universal Studios.  Freeway construction addressed automobile access problems so that the Santa Ana 5 Freeway now exits directly to the Disneyland Park for visitor convenience.

Anaheim has made it a goal to get you, the tourist, to stay. And though there is no sandy beach, per se, Disneyland's California Adventure theme park recreates a beach region complete with Paradise Pier. It's the beach without the sand.
