Log Cabin on Highway 101 Road Journey in California

The Highway 101 road trip takes you past this log cabin seen between the Gaviota Pass and Solvang. The ocean isn't always visible along the way and in this location you'll see mostly hills. North of the Gaviota Pass, it's growing into a housing development.  One log cabin turned into two and soon there's a tract here. This growing, unique housing development where acreage is sold is zoned for Buellton, not far from the city areas of Buellton and Solvang.

Visible on the southbound lanes of Highway 101, the cabin is a kit that's for sale with the huge, beautiful home perched above the freeway on some wide open land that promotes its natural beauty in this rugged, rolling countryside.

When you drive south, after you've reached this spot in the road, you begin to anticipate the state operated rest stop with public restrooms at the Gaviota Pass. The pass includes a tunnel carved in the rock that cars drive through on the northbound direction. That tunnel was filmed in the movie Sideways as two buddies drove on the 101 Highway through it heading north to Buellton.

The public restroom stops available on both north and southbound lanes seem to be closed more often than open in the past several years.  Your next opportunity for free pit stops  doesn't come until you reach Goleta, approximately 40 minutes from here.

The nearest hotels to this location are in Buellton, Solvang, Goleta and Santa Barbara. State parks and beaches along the way include Gaviota, Refugio and El Capitan. You can veer off Highway 101 to Santa Barbara and take the mountain route on Highway 154. That trip is geographically shorter but more challenging driving. The journey takes you by the beautiful Cachuma Lake County Park with camping, fishing and even a general store.
