Yosemite National Park is a magical place where millions-of-year old mountains tower high above the Yosemite Valley floor, appearing
to constantly change with rapid shifts in weather.
The sun can
be shining bright till banks of fog suddenly appear, or a rain or
snow shower sweeps through unexpectedly. Especially
breathtaking are the waterfalls that cascade and skip over the
surface of the mountains, landing in streams that flow gracefully
through the meadows.
Home
to the famous, often photographed Half Dome rock structure, Yosemite
features more granite domes than any place on earth. Massive
granite domes form when large curved layers of rock exfoliate or
slab off.
The
Merced River watershed originates in Yosemite National Park's
southeastern region, most in the Clark and Cathedral ranges in the
high country. The river plunges over the Nevada and Vernal
waterfalls, then meanders across the flat Yosemite valley floor.
When it leaves this valley, it weaves, winds and descends down the
Merced Canyon into the San Joaquin Valley.
Merced River has been designated a National Wild and Scenic River.
