Rockin' Fig - Rick Fignetti
Rockin' Fig Report
As a
warm up to the film festival on Monday
July 21 we will continue with the Neo
tradition of roasting tributes. This
year's honoree was Rick Rockin' Fig
Fignetti. The name that ultimately fits
the man's personality and synonymous to
Huntington Beach, Rockin' Fig with his
ambidextrous career is no doubt a legend
within our Surf City. A ten time West
Coast champion, Fig has announced the US
Open of Surfing the last 12 years and
has been the KROQ FM Surfologist for the
last 19 years doing morning surf
reports. He also owns a surf shop on
Main Street in HB called Rockin' Fig
Surf, as well as has his own column in
the HB Independent, Wet N Wild with
Rockin' Fig, in which keeps locals
connected to the ins and outs of the
surf world.
The
roast was a hilarious highlight,
moderated by Peter "PT" Townend with an
all star roaster roster, including Tom
Curren, Mike Downing, Scott Waring, Bud
Llamas, etc.
It
was fun to hear all his stories and hear
his friends talk about the early days of
surfing together in HB. Fig took time
from the US Open to come down to his own
roast. Everybody wore pigs around their
necks in honor of the legend, the Fig.
The
video above shows Rockin' Fig, talking
about what happened at the event. Filmed
by Chris MacDonald, the pre-show for
VIPs, included Leslie & Dave Carlos of
Big Red Productions, Fig's
family--mother, wife, daughter, etc., HB
Surfing Museum reps, Sara Long, event
planner extraordinaire, Mike Ester, a
famous surfer, Surfdog, famous HB surf
photog., and an all-star cast of surfing
greats. The event was hosted by Frank
Savage and Mike Savage of Luggatti's
Italian Restaurant in downtown
Huntington Beach. Delicious pizza,
salad, chicken and outrageous cocktails,
beer, wine and beverages were served
during this night of beach, food and
fun.
