Bear Valley Ski Resort in
Alpine County, California video above shows general manager Mark
Phillips describes the ski resort operations as he stands out in the
parking lot, surrounded by Sierra mountains.
This history of Bear Valley
Ski Resort is quite a story as you may guess, seeing the photo of a
young Clint Eastwood at Bear Valley. Some call it a story of the Hatfields
and McCoys. It has taken several decades to organize the ski valley,
ski slopes and assets into one company responsible for development
of the region. In the video, Bear Valley Ski Resort manager Mark
Phillips
describes plans that will tie the gondolas to a village that you
must drive to currently. Underground parking, approx. 600 condos and
a complete Alpine village will go through the hoops in this small
parcel of privately owned land surrounded by national parks and
forests. Alpine County in California's western slope Sierra mountain
range is over 90 percent government owned and operated.
Throughout the years
Bear Valley skiing has hosted the famous, the celebrities and
wealthy, as well as regularly people. At one time a quarter-million
people would flock to the ski resort in an average season.
Surrounded by four other ski resorts that are larger by land
mass...Heavenly, Squaw, Mammoth and North Star, several of the other
ski resorts have invested in their slopes, gondolas, and
accommodations, a necessary ingredient to boosting the number of
visitors. Bear Valley is poised, ready to invest in the the
property, create lodgings and a tax base that will sustain it during
the seasons, according to its general manager Mark Phillips. When it
does, it will become one of the top four ski resorts in California
by size alone.
Known for its sums of
natural snowfall, the average is 359" (30 feet) annually, but often
is much more. The summit is 8,500' elevation and lower mountain base
6,600'. A vertical drop of 1900' makes for some exciting
downhill sport with 67 trails to select or use of the open bowl in
picking your path. There are 6 double chairs, 2 triple chairs, a
carpet lift and a high-speed quad called Polar Express for accessing
the mountain peaks. A network of runs accessing the snowmaking
coverage system is served by 9 lifts.
In addition to great snow skiing
with 25% advance skier slopes, you'll find this is one of the most
popular cross country ski resorts in the USA. Snowboarding,
snowshoeing and cross country, plus sledding and snowmobiling are
all enjoyed locally.
