The Laguna Beach Pageant
of the Masters is an annual theater performance event combining
acting and illusion with art to bring paintings to life in 3-d
life-size staged events with real human actors standing in the
paintings. Their goal is to have live actors blend with the painting and not
move, becoming the characters in the classical or contemporary
paintings. On some nights when the moths fly into the lit
stage, it takes a lot of self-control for these actors to stay
still, including some youngsters no more than a few years old.
Pageant of the
Masters is one of the oldest, most delightful events
in world for art lovers. Set in the Laguna Canyon
which is lined with eucalyptus groves, the fragrant
night air in the Laguna bowl amphitheater where the
event is held is intoxicating. An effort to relocate
the event to another venue was fought and to date,
has been successfully thwarted, thank goodness! If
you can get tickets to this summer staging that runs
July through August, we've yet to have anyone tell
us they didn't like it.
The production
itself involves huge sums of volunteers and
community efforts. The actors are not paid,
but do volunteer their time to participate. What's
required to be a part of this show is a commitment
of your summer nights and pre-rehearsal schedule.
Those accepted are dressed in costume and often
painted with non-toxic sprays and make-up
applications required for the role. There's an open
call usually in January for playing roles in the

In recent years it has
been difficult to purchase tickets as the popularity of the
event has grown, and the shows sell out. But for
enjoyment's sake, you can drive by the buildings and see the
paintings out in front. Whether in a car, walking, or riding the
trolley Laguna Beach offers locals and vacationers for free, the
front of the building includes a painting and the dramatic hills
in the background.
