Southland Senior Olympics Surfing Contest includes a video of contestants cutting up for the reporter. All in good fun.

With a turn-out of 15 competitors, the stakes were not that high in winning 12 slots in the senior surfing competition. It could have been worse.  The event, which was announced recently, had very little publicity, so Gary Sahagen of the HB Surfing Museum and Longboard Crew Surf Club of Huntington Beach sent out an email to his surfing buddies and asked them to consider showing up and participating. 

It worked!  Bob Bolen and a cast of characters met the challenge of an early Saturday morning dip in the Pacific to the 1967 Rolling Stones release "Between the Buttons."  Several reporters showed up with their cups of coffee, cameras and notepads. 

Event planners are hoping to spread the word and make it a bigger event in 2008. The odds of winning are best for those over 70. Only one gent (pictured above) entered, and he won!

One chant (heard on video above) would sound like this in its full version:
