Torrey Pines
Municipal Golf Course is indeed a rare phenomenon as
public golf courses go. Initially designed by William Bell,
the project was completed by his son, William Bell Jr.
in 1956, after his death. The course
has been known and recognized as one of the premier San
Diego County golf courses for decades. Set on a hilltop above the La
Jolla Beaches and adjacent to the historic Torrey Pines
Glider Port, there are 36 holes in two courses, a North
Course and a South Course. Many holes feature stunning
ocean views and the scent of sage and eucalyptus that
grow in the area.
Re-designed
with an extreme makeover in 2001, Rees Jones increased
the length of the South Course, adding several fairway
and green side bunkers. In addition to the course
enhancements and superb setting in La Jolla, California,
a premier vacation destination, The course enjoys two
hotels, a 4 Diamond
Hilton La Jolla
Torrey Pines and a
5 Diamond
The Lodge at
Torrey Pines,
which also received an extreme makeover from the ground
up around the time that the course was redesigned. As a
result, this beach destination is truly a golf
destination as well.
For those seeking to
play the course, the prices reflect an affordable
municipal course fee schedule. Torrey Pines Golf Course
is usually reaches capacity on a daily basis, but hotels
at the golf course claim to guarantee tee times for
their hotel guests, a bonus for your stay at these view
hotels. On warm, summer days, the golf course is a
paradise for players who enjoy the temperate San Diego
weather, some of the finest in the world. But when
William Bell envisioned this course, he imagined a wind
and sea swept golf course. Bell's son continued his
legacy after his death in the early 1950's, by seeing
the golf course to fruition. The land surrounding the
course was dedicated as a state reserve that's open to
the public for hiking and exploring.
Among the great golfers who have competed at Torrey
Pines are Tiger Woods, Jose Maria Olazabal, Nathan
Green, John Daly, Chris Riley and Luck Donald, Scott
Simpson, Mark O'Meara, Ernie Els, Nick Price, John Cook,
Craig Stadler, Corey Pavin, Laura Baugh, and Amy Alcott.
With San Diego's great climate and hotels right at the
course, an endless list of pro golfers and regular folks
such as Hollywood actors have frequented this
destination that only seems to become more popular as
time passes.
