Torrance, CA - Travel and Things To Do

Many tourists bombard the well-known beaches in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County in California, but Torrance boasts more than 1.5 miles of unspoiled coastline that is far less crowded than the other beaches in the area. Unlike the famous spots like Redondo Beach and Long Beach, the main spot at Torrance Beach offers sunbathers and swimmers more natural sites than commercial ones. Bike paths and hiking trails dominate, and even the beach itself is accessible only down flights of stairs. Once there, beachgoers are treated to undeveloped coastline, inlets and coves, and even occasional dolphin sightings.

But in all of its natural glory, Torrance has plenty for the commercial-minded traveler as well. In fact, Torrance is home to one of the largest malls in America, the Del Amo Fashion Center. This 2.5 million-square-foot shopping center houses a bevy of traditional department stores, chain boutiques, and independent gift shops. In addition to nearly a dozen full-service restaurants, the Del Amo Fashion Center has an 18-screen movie mega-plex and an outdoor entertainment complex. There are also a number of other large retail areas where shoppers can find a souvenir to fit any budget.

Unlike many of the other large, commercial meccas in California, Torrance offers a small-town escape from the main tourist centers of Los Angeles County. Although the city itself is not that small in size, Torrance bills itself as "The City with a Hometown Feel." Even the main downtown area is filled with historic buildings and quaint shops, which further support its claim to the landscape. On the fourth Saturday of each month, the Torrance Antique Street Faire takes place. Vendors sell goods and wares both vintage and new, and they are joined by food providers and antique appraisers.

Of course, any town that has a small-town feel is not complete without an annual festival that draws travelers from around the state and beyond. Torrance's version of this kind of celebration is the annual Armed Forces Day Celebration. Every year in May, the city of Torrance puts on a major event celebrating the country's military forces. There is a large parade, military exhibits, a performance by the United States Coast Guard Band, and other related activities. The parade claims to be the longest-running Armed Forces Day parade in the United States.

For visitors from outside the state of California, Torrance offers the best of two worlds. It is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, but still close enough to put tourists within a short drive from these meccas. Any family who chooses Torrance as their stronghold can still make it to Hollywood, Disneyland, Beverly Hills, or the Saint Monica pier in a relatively short amount of time. So overall, the fact that Torrance is a bit off the beaten path, makes it one of Los Angeles County's greatest assets. From pristine beaches to major retail areas, Torrance provides a quieter break from the traditional tourist routines. It is truly a destination where travelers can have it all.
