Surfrider Beach near Malibu, CA

Nestled on the coastline of the Malibu Lagoon lie the beautiful sands of Surfrider Beach. Surfrider Beach is mostly known as the insider's location in the surfing community, but what you might not know is that Surfrider Beach is also a prime location for saltwater fishing, picnicking and bird watching, and studying the area history. A nature connoisseur will also be delighted to find a pristine Southern California saltwater marsh.

Visitors who are interested in expanding their historical knowledge of the area will also want to visit the area's Adamson House. Adamson House is a National Historic Site which is located nearby in Malibu Lagoon State Beach. This Spanish-Moor revival was built in 1929 and has been called the "Taj Mahal of Tile" because of its use of the beautiful tile work by the local area's Malibu Potteries. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and has been known as a California Historic Landmark since 1985. It is a historic beauty that should not be missed!

If you are interested in getting a dose of the area's more recent history, then you can revisit these films in the comfort of your own home. Surfrider Beach is known for hosting its share of filming. Fox Ranch and Century Ranch have filmed a number of popular movies on this gorgeous beach, including a number of the Tarzan films. Also filmed in the area are movies including the titles Pleasantville (1998), Secretary (2002), Planet of the Apes (1968) and the series M*A*S*H.

If you have kids in tow, visiting this estuary will be a highly fun and educational experience. There are guided tours available at Surfrider Beach that highlight the many tide pools and marshes in the area. There are many different flora and fauna native to this natural area. Mountain lions, golden eagles, mule deer, bobcats, and southern steelhead all call this area their home. You may even see a gray whale! If you are planning a trip to this pristine surfing & activity-rich beach be sure to arrive during the hours of 6am and dusk and observe the rules specific rules of this beach. There are no beach fires, pets or alcohol allowed. If you are planning on getting into the water you will be happy to know that there are lifeguards available during beach access hours. Driving Directions: From Santa Monica, head west on the Pacific Coast Highway, about 13 miles. From Hwy 101, take the Las Virgenes Road exit, then head west through Malibu Canyon, turn left at Pacific Coast Hwy, then travel 1.5 miles east. You will find the entrance to the parking lot on Cross Creek Road, and will need to navigate through their 90 parking spaces (3 disabled) to find a spot. It can get crowded during the afternoon so plan to come early to relieve this stress.
