Places to See a Sunset in Huntington Beach
There isn’t a bad seat in the house
when it comes to viewing a spectacular Huntington Beach
sunset. But we’ve traveled around the town and have
consistently found several top choices for sunset viewing.
Whether you are on a romantic stroll,
just passing through on Pacific Coast Highway on a trip
to another destination or happen to be driving around and
running errands, the sunsets are spectacular and worth a 10
minute break from the routine.
So let’s get to it…here’s the
list:
Huntington City Beach south side of the pier near the
shoreline is the number one choice. The way the sun
filters through the famous Huntington Beach Pier pilings
is awesome. The play of light and shadow is not only
mesmerizing, the moist, evening air is intoxicating. It
is guaranteed to relax your mind.
Huntington City Beach Dog Beach parking lots between
Seapoint and Golden West Streets is our number two
choice (SEE PHOTO ABOVE.) People gather for the sunsets and stay just
until it gets dark. At this location you can watch the
interplay of people and pets on the beach with the
darkening sky as the sun drops brilliantly into the
ocean. It isn’t just a sunset, it’s an entire
experience.
Bolsa
Chica Wetlands Mesa is our number three choice for
watching sunsets. Though the trail to the mesa is
currently closed from the bridge crossing, you can loop
around the opposite direction to get there quite easily.
Standing up on the hill, you can see the birds dive and
dart after fish and other food. Their flight, mixed with
the golden fading light in oranges and yellows contrasts
with the dark blues and grays of the ocean at this time
of day. It’s a 3-D experience being at the wetlands any
time of day, but at this special show, the sky draws the
final curtain. We recommend that you start heading back
to your car before dark, however.
Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort
(hotel) west facing rooms and suites could be number one
choice but we must appeal to the local audience as well.
The best views on the coast are afforded those who
reserve a room at the 4 Diamond Hilton Waterfront Beach
Resort.
Hyatt Regency Huntington
Beach Resort and Spa
west facing rooms and suites are our next selection for
sunset views. The hotel does experience a few
obstructions that some see as enhancements. Palm trees
can block the view a bit or simply make it a more
interesting show.
Overlook Park in Huntington Beach on Garfield
and Seapoint Streets comes in as number six for ocean
views. There’s no hassle to park. It’s free, its wide
open in a dirt field overlooking the oil fields, Pacific
Ocean and Catalina Island. The experience has a natural
feel to it. It is silent, simple and soothing.
Huntington Harbour in a boat is a great sunset
experience. Though the sunset, itself, is obstructed,
the reflections on the water are interesting. Try it in
a Duffy boat that you can rent at Sunset Beach (seats 8
people).
Huntington
Beach Pier is a great location to watch surfers, people
walking on the beach and the distant shores of Long
Beach and San Pedro as the sun goes down. The breeze can
be pleasant but don't forget to take a jacket. For
locals who have never experienced a temperature below 55
degrees, the night time pier experience can feel like
Antarctica.
