California Kids Vacations
Solano County became one of America’s 100 best communities for
kids by America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth several years ago.
Founded to insure the well-being of
children and young adults in America, a national competition
was held with a panel of luminaries such as Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human
Services Donna Shalala; baseball great Cal Ripken, Jr.; and Tim Russert,
NBC’s Washington Bureau Chief and moderator of Meet the Press.
For tourists, travelers
and kids on vacation, Solano County does honor its children with theme
parks, aquariums, candy factory tours, boat roads on the bay and a whole lot
more. Solana County enjoys Six Flags Marine World, a unique theme park
with extreme thrill rides and an entire zoo and aquarium section with shows
and learning opportunities for children and adults. From the Jelly Belly
candy factory tour with a free sample bar to the fairs, parades and boat
rides from Vallejo to San Francisco, kids can enjoy a variety of tours,
attractions and activities.
With over 85% of
California travelers comprised from the state's population, families on
vacation with children can travel a short distance, the far reaches of the
state, or fly into San Francisco or Oakland Airport to enjoy the best that
Solano County has to offer.
About Solano County's 100 Best Communities ranking:
In a field of 1,200 candidate
communities across the United States, Solano County was among the 100
winners in part, because "Solano residents support the value of
collaboration,” stated the Alliance.
Solano County Board of Supervisors has been charged in the past decade with strategic goals
that focus on services for young people to improve their lives, maintain
their safe communities and improve their health and well-being.
Solano County was recognized primarily for the efforts put forth by the
Solano County Board of Supervisors, the Solano Coalition for Better Health,
the Children’s Network of Solano County, the Solano County Department
of Health & Human Services and First 5 Solano, the County’s voter-approved Proposition 10
funding for children’s services.
An estimated 96 percent of Solano
County’s children now have health care coverage – an achievement that the
America’s Promise panel recognized in its selection.
Other aspects of Solano
County life not mentioned in the award recognition process are known by Bay
Area residents and visitors to Solano County. Jelly Belly Factory in
Fairfield and Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo are two of the county's
premier attractions catering to families and kids especially.
