We hate to pick favorites but if we must, there are some standout choices.  For art and ambience, Carmel by the Sea is our favorite. It's not just the galleries themselves (Laguna Beach and La Jolla in Southern California can rival the art experience), it's the fragrant Monterey pines that line the walkways of the quaint village, where you'll often find the artists jetsetting into town.

 

For outlet shopping, two personal outlet favorites are Pismo Beach Prime Outlets and Cannery Row outlet shops in Monterey.  Pismo Beach doesn't offer much in the way of food services, but it contains a discount perfume outlet, clothing, shoes, paper goods and kitchen items. It's an easy in & out experience for no-nonsense shoppers.  Cannery Row has parking on location and includes a Reebok factory outlet. Those stores are not too common. It overlooks the Monterey Bay, making it a great stop after a meal at Bubba Gumps.

 

For upscale boutique, big bucks shopping, Rodeo Drive is hands down, the finest. Some salons require an appointment just to get in.  Palm Desert nearly rivals this but the weather's too hot. For antique stores, a small town atmosphere really lends to the hunt for a treasure. You have to have lots of time to dig in so we found a place where they rolled back the clock, the village of Arroyo Grande. Youthful shops are everywhere in California but one special location also features one of the largest skate parks in the U.S.

 

Go to The Block at Orange for a fun day, watching skaters at Van's Skate. Some shoppers swear by downtown San Francisco's fine clothiers and department store sales, others love San Diego's shopping malls such as the Jon Jerdes designed Horton Plaza. And for those who don't mind a crowd, South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa anchors 4 city blocks of shopping centers. While this shopping experience can be overwhelming, most shoppers have strategies for seeing what's most important on their shopping lists. Finally, shoppers can't ignore Santa Barbara's State Street and San Luis Obispo's tree-lined Higuera  Street, both capturing the charm of the Central California coast with college influences apparent in dining, entertainment and bookstores.
