San Bernardino is the name of both a county and a city
in Southern California. The city is situated at the foot of the San Bernardino
mountains (seen in view above) as part of an inland county that contains
no beaches, but a diversity of landscapes from desert to mountain peaks
and beautiful lakes with boating, fishing, skiing and even boat tours.
There are 31 cities in the county that include Adelanto,
Apple Valley, Barstow, Big Bear Lake, Chino,
Chino Hills, Colton, Crestline, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Hesperia, Highland,
Joshua Tree, Lake Arrowhead, Loma Linda, Lucerne Valley Montclair Needles
Ontario Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Rialto, Running Springs, San Bernardino,
Twentynine Palms, Upland, Victorville, Wrightwood, Yermo, Yucaipa and Yucca
Valley. One of the region's fastest growing counties provides affordable
housing, by Southern California standards, and is known for its rugged
residents who can actually commute 100 miles each way to jobs in L.A.
When the flowers are in bloom, the desert and mountains
offer some of the best opportunities for picture taking. Winter transforms
the mountain communities into a playground for ski and snowboard
enthusiasts, while summer offers an abundance of water sports, hiking and
mountain biking. From Calico Ghost Town to Ontario Speedway, from the mountain
resorts of Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead to the stark deserts framed
in famous black and white photos by the likes of Ansel Adams, visitors can enjoy
a variety of activities and sports that include camping in the San Bernardino
National Forests and dozens more:
- Big Pine Flat Horse Camp 7 miles from Fawnskin
- Bluff Mesa Group Camp near Big Bear Lake
- Green Valley near Arrowbear
- Green Spot Equestrian Camp
- Gray's Peak Group Campground near Big Bear Lake
- Hanna Flat near Big Bear Lake
- IronWood Group Camp near Fawnskin
- Marion Mountain
- North Shore near Lake Arrowhead
