SAN FRANCISCO COUNTY CALIFORNIA CITIES POPULATION San Francisco County and the City of San Francisco by most appearances are one in the same, population wise. The population of the city is the same as the population of the county. San Francisco has grown rapidly but its growth is primarily vertical. With little room for building new homes, the population increase comes through construction of higher, taller building in this city on the hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Largely rebuilt after The Great San Francisco Earthquake of April 18, 1906 measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, the population 100 years ago was approximately 400,000 with over half that number left homeless (225,000) from the San Andreas fault quake. Since that time, San Francisco has faired better through better building practices as evidenced in the Loma Prieta earthquake measuring 7 in 1989.
