| Prepare yourself
for the cleanest food preparation and most interesting textures combined
in dishes stretching the palette's ability to comprehend subtleties of
sweet and sour. There's just so much going on in the fantastic flavors
created by Chef Jon Magnusson at Restaurant
211, you'll have to keep going back to this Carmel Valley favorite to analyze
what you are tasting, and to try a variety of dishes prepared fresh daily.
Fantastic food, fine wines, an artistically, pleasing atmosphere and the
friendly company of Restaurateurs who really care, provide compelling reasons
to seek out this slightly tucked away spot at the Crossroads Center in
Carmel Valley.
While waiting for
a dinner meal, you can sip a fine wine and enjoy soft jazz or live music
with a cellist playing once a week. A warm basket of soft, hot bread
rolls with an artistic, rose shaped butter arrives--but be forewarned.
Bread lovers are consumed with the melt-in-your-mouth appetizer that can
easily become an addiction. You don't want to stuff yourself too
early because there are many surprises to come.
Let's start with
the salad. I was impressed with my first bowl of salad at Restaurant 211,
so decided I would try it another day to be sure this was the real thing.
On Day 2, the salad was as spotless and cool as the day before. Bleu
Cheese and house salad dressings were light, fresh and included herbs to
enhance the flavor, rather than overdoses of salt and sugar to mask low
grade products and poor preparation sometimes found elsewhere.
Restaurant 211 should
be very proud of their salads. Their location near the Salinas Valley
"salad bowl" where lettuce is grown means that fresh greens can be harvested
and served within a day's time. Fresh ingredients and proper preparation
make these salads a cut above. Two types of fresh olives, a thinly sliced
ribbon of carrot, thin slices of sweet, red onions and average size pieces
of lettuce offer everything you need in a generous dinner salad.
From fish to steaks,
burgers to quesadillas, there's something for everyone at Restaurant 211.
Vegetarians who stay at home when there's nothing offered on a menu, can
dine on a Garden Burger or a delicious Grilled Eggplant and Vegetable Sandwich
which includes roasted red peppers. We're told that Chef Jon is accommodating
and often willing to prepare special items on request.
The dinner menu offering
of salmon is an excellent value for those seeking a hearty, healthy
meal. Attractively arranged on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes,
the generous portion of Fresh Atlantic Salmon baked on a cedar wood was
topped with Braised Fresh Fennel in Beurre Blanc Sauce and Pink Peppercorns.
This choice maintained interest with a beguiling sauce and those
interesting textures at play once again.
Whether you go for
breakfast, lunch or dinner, you are going to like the menu, preparation,
quality, service and price of gourmet food you could pay twice as
much for elsewhere. With what you save, you can afford to return
to the restaurant another day. Would we make a day's journey to Carmel
for the love of a meal at Restaurant 211? Absolutely!
