Hotel del Coronado location is one
of several southernmost California
beach resorts, and the only Southern
California beach resort that brings
the opulence and grace of the early
20th century to travelers today.

Hotel del Coronado is a resort that
is easy to get to with a few
simple
directions and a map. "Hotel
del" bares the the Coronado name,
and in many ways represents Coronado
Island as one of California's
premier vacation resorts. If you
wish to see one historic thing in
San Diego, by all means choose Hotel
del Coronado as your stop. In the
photo above, you are looking at the
Hotel del Coronado and its public
beach from a vantage point atop
Point Loma at the national historic
US park
Cabrillo Monument, commemorating
early explorers to San Diego.
Located in the southern portion of
San Diego County on the island arm
that extends south from the city of
San Diego, Hotel del Coronado can be
accessed in several ways by car but
one of the favorite is the San
Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. While
that bridge is generally the
easiest, fastest way to get to the
island (another method requires
overshooting your destination by
going south, then west, and north.)
Coronado Island is known for its
rush hour gridlock from commuters
reporting to work on North Island
Naval Air Station. $36 million was
spent to build a six-lane inspection
station at the west end of Third
Street for easier, quicker access to
the secured base where more than
36,000 people work when all the
ships are in port. For the visiting
tourist, the traffic can seem
bewildering. You can actually find
yourself sitting in a car attempting
to cross the San Diego-Coronado Bay
Bridge and have to wait as the
traffic creeps at a snail's pace.
State Route 282 on Coronado Island,
the route commuters travel to the
base, is the shortest state highway
in California and spans only eight
blocks.
After tourists enter the island from
the Coronado Bay Bridge on Highway
75, the name also becomes 4th Street
if you continue straight. At Orange
Avenue, the main downtown Coronado
road, you'll want to make a left.
Officially the Orange is also part
of Highway 75 but the prominent
signage and designation is Orange
Avenue. (Oranges once grew
abundantly in regional groves, and
continue to populate back yards of
homes in this temperate climate that
rarely experiences a winter freeze.)
You'll pass lovely Spreckles Park on
your left, and a greenbelt where
you'll often find people and
children playing or enjoying the
lawns. As you observe
rows of shops along the avenue,
you'll need to start looking for
parking signs, metered parking or
plan to enter the Hotel del Parking
lot and pay the fee charged there.
Once arriving at your destination,
you'll enjoy wandering the grounds,
seeing the spacious lobby, dining
areas, restaurants, books and gift
store, then head downstairs for the
walking tour that includes historic
photos and signage with
explanations. You'll find a
few boutique shopping opportunities
along the way with art, clothing,
jewelry and gifts sold by various
merchants who rent space from the
Hotel del Coronado.

Several other methods to visit Hotel
del Coronado are possible and you
don't need to rent a car. San Diego
is known for its incredible public
transportation system, and it is
also known for the ambience and
friendly advice local San Diegans
provide to tourists. Many locals
take the public transportation and
can help you find your bearings.
But three other methods for
accessing the island include the
Coronado Bay Ferry, the public bus,
and
Old Town Trolley,
a
paid tourist attraction that for a
fee allows you to purchase a one-day
ticket and visit up to 10 stops at
San Diego's most popular
attractions. We purchased the pass
and managed to squeeze in Old Town,
San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and
Coronado Island and Hotel del
Coronado in on one day! It was busy
and jam-packed but for short trips
or gaining overviews of the city,
it's fantastic and we want to do it
again soon.
