MAY 20, 2007
Long Beach, Calif.-Rancho Spring
Festival:
The Spring Festival will focus on daily life and the hide and tallow economy
during the Mexican Rancho era. Join a festive, family-friendly
afternoon that will educate and entertain both children and adults.
Rancho Los Cerritos is distinguished as a National, State and Local Historic
Landmark and is one of the few remaining two-story adobes in Southern
California. The Monterey-style adobe was built by Don Juan Temple in 1844 to
serve as headquarters for a prosperous 27,000-acre cattle ranch once part of
Nieto’s 1790 Spanish land grant. A visit to the adobe is a step into the
past which provides visitors with educational opportunities that illuminate
our heritage and give a “sense of place” and continuity within our
ever-changing society. Visit www.rancholoscerritos.org for information on
upcoming events. This event is a joint presentation by Friends of Rancho Los
Cerritos and Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, Department of Parks,
Recreation and Marine, City of Long Beach.
The festival theme, a Visit to Old
California, explores the legendary life of Spanish and Mexican rancheros
through period music, dance, costume and ranching activities. Children can
practice lassoing, make a brand, punch tin, tool leather or try freshly made
tortillas and hand-churned butter. Simple dance lessons and festive
decorations will provide a taste of the fandango (ranch party). Blacksmiths
and wood carvers will demonstrate their skills, and historical re-enactors
and storytellers will bring Old California to life. Throughout the
afternoon, guided tours of the historic adobe ranch house will highlight
1844 features. Sunday, May 20 from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. Rancho Los Cerritos
Historic Site, 4600 Virginia Road, Long Beach 90807. Located northwest of
the intersection of San Antonio Drive and Long Beach Boulevard. $5.00
adults/$3.00 children 4-12; 3 and under free.
