Petaluma, California is located 32 miles north of
San Francisco in Sonoma County. The
vibrant city has grown into one of the region's premier residential
and tourism communities, featuring a shopping outlet, beautiful
Victorian homes, agriculture and easy access to
Sonoma County's 140
wineries, Sonoma Coastline, Point Reyes National Seashore and
Redwood forests. Petaluma River is the heart of the city's downtown
region. The west bank of the river showcases Petaluma's Victorian
properties.
Known as the Egg Capitol of the World for over 50 years,
Petaluma was the largest producer of eggs in California during the
first part of the 20th century. The egg incubator was created in
Petaluma in 1875 and the city was the home of the world's only
chicken pharmacy. Petaluma was also the site of the world's first
airmail run to Santa Rosa on February 17, 1911.
Founded in
1852, Petaluma is one of California’s oldest cities with one of the
best-preserved Historic Downtown areas on the National Register of
Historic Places, featuring Spanish Colonial, Queen Anne, Victorian,
Neo-classical, Gothic-revival, and Italianate architecture.
American Graffiti, Basic Instinct, The Horse Whisperer,
Phenomenon and Peggy Sue Got Married were all filmed in
Petaluma.
