Huntington Beach
4th of July Parade
4

The 96th annual Huntington Beach 4th of July  Independence Day Parade & Celebration was a spectacular event.

Revolutionary War re-enactments in  Lake Park on Main Street provided entertainment as Red Coats and Minutemen encamped for two days and engaged in skirmishes.

A  5-K run and pancake breakfast kick started "Parade 2000, Celebrating the Century".  The parade began at 10 a.m. starting near Main and Orange Streets and traveled up Main Street past Garfield.  An evening fireworks show at Huntington Beach High School rounded out the spectacular celebration on July 4.

The largest parade west of the Mississippi reportedly attracts over 250,000 people and is the largest citizen-financed event of its kind  in the United States.

Dating back to 1904 when over 50,000 people attended the first parade, the continuing 96-year tradition demonstrates that old fashioned patriotism never goes out of style with American businesses and families. While the rest of the nation bakes, it is normally a cool 72 degrees near the beach.

Feedback: What did the audience think?

We are longtime fans of the annual 4th of July Parade.  I am ever amazed at  the number of people this event attracts every year.  We love the spirit and the community it represents.  Having grown up in the South, it brings me back to a feeling of living in a small town where everyone knows one another, without having to give up all the wonderful benefits of living in this grand metropolis of Orange County.  Huntington Beach gives us the best of both worlds!

We were located at the end of the parade route on the median across from City Hall.  Is there some  way of monitoring the speed of the entries?  More often than not, there were 3 to 4 minute segments of time between one entry's passing to the next.  We ended up having to leave early because the children with us simply could not stay in the heat any longer. Please take this letter in the spirit in which it is written.  We love HB and the parade.  We have friends and family who came from Texas just to be here for it.  This was their third year to do so.  Thank you for listening and thank you for all the hard work that went into this year's parade.

Sincerely,
Huntington Beach residents
