San Onofre - Millions of people driving between Los
Angeles and San Diego enjoy the coastal route that offers ocean views
south of San Clemente. Between Orange County's southernmost city and San
Diego's northernmost Oceanside, rugged hillsides and a beach called San
Onofre are what you will find. Located near a nuclear generating
station, San Onofre Beach is popular for camping, sand volleyball games
and even nude swimming in some areas.
What it's best known
for (besides the long, busy highway) is surfing. Surfers from throughout
California know this located for its reputation of providing waves just
right for Southern California surfing. Located in San Diego County,
surfers will drive and then park at the public lots. Next they'll hike
out to the beach with surfboards in hands. It is worth it that much!
Also of importance to
travelers is a rest stop to the right of the southbound lanes on
Interstate 5, 5.8 miles north of Oceanside.
On the west side of San Diego Freeway -
Interstate 5 not far from the exit for San Onofre Beach, you can exit
where the road sign indicates a scenic view overlook. Pictured above is
that scenic stop known as Las Flores View Point. It does not offer
restrooms or facilities. It has a parking lot, concrete pad with a
plaque that states the location is part of El Camino Real (The Royal
Road). The Royal Road or King's Highway is an historical route taken by
the Spanish Franciscans under the direction of Father Junipero Serra who
established missions throughout California. From this vantage
point looking west, you'll see views of the ocean, and to the east,
mountains.
Ground squirrels, birds, surfers in the
distance and occasional military activity such as helicopters or marine
craft in training are some of the things you may see when you stop and
look. This location near Camp Pendleton and San Onofre nuclear
generating station is refreshingly barren of homes, stores and crowds.
It is a nice place to stop and look at the ocean, breathe the fresh air
and relax before you continue your journey.
Note: One of the photos above shows a
plaque, Blue Star Memorial Highway. That sign is not located at Las
Flores View Point, but is located at a popular rest stop nearby. Blue
Star Memorial Highway signifies a tribute to the Armed Forces and was
sponsored by the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
