Festival on the Green
with the California
Philharmonic Orchestra
|
|
|
Festival
on the Green is the result of a conversation between Music Director,
Victor Verner (top left), and Tony Yakamovitch, Deputy Director of Los
Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department. A great idea
was born and has become a treasured cultural event that people look forward
to every summer.
 |
Lush, green sloping fields with tables and chairs in
an open bowl are surrounded by sweeping, fragrant trees. As the sun sets
and concerts begin, the smell of blossoms hangs in the air. Peacocks that
wander the grounds in daylight, fly into the trees at night and can be
heard making their eerie, whooping sounds during pauses in
the music and intermissions. Such enthusiasm often brings on a hearty laugh
from audiences.
Summer evenings in Los Angeles nearly guarantee no rain
and temperatures of around 72 degrees. A light jacket is always recommended
for evening outings at the Arboretum, just in case it is needed. |
Guests can purchase barbecue chicken, beer, wine, smoothies,
espressos and lattes which local restaurants prepare on location or bring
picnic baskets if they prefer. |

| "A Night in Old Vienna" sponsored by the city of
Vienna included Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21, Brahms Concerto
for Violin, Cello and Orchestra and three selections from Strauss: The
Gypsy Baron Overture, Emperor Waltz Op. 437 and Blue Danube Waltz Op. 314.
Major event sponsor is Sunset Magazine.
Concerts before the evening symphony are an added bonus.
A debut CD release from Valarie King Jazz Band (above right) was featured
recently. One of the most popular flautists in the music industry, the
University of Southern California graduate can be heard on recordings of
Whitney Houston, Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, Michael
Jackson, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Michael Crawford,
for starters. She has shared the Hollywood Bowl stage with mentors Hubert
Laws and Jean Pierre Rampal and can be found playing on nearly every television
awards program and recording imaginable. King is excited to see her
own original work on CD release: Valarie King Today, Tomorrow and
Forever. |
