Newport Beach Photos - When
taking pictures in Newport Beach, California, expect to see lots of blue!
You
could call it the blue city (South Lake Tahoe has taken on the "blue" moniker) thanks to
all the ocean vistas. With a handful of manmade islands, miles of beaches and
then the hills perched above the Newport Bay where you can gaze down to the blue
jewel, you're never far away from blue in Newport Beach.
Some of the
assets that lend themselves to photographs in Newport Beach include bays, beaches, sunsets and boats
that fill the Newport Harbor. From half a dozen or so manmade islands to the
famous body surfing spot, The Wedge, there's much to explore and photograph in
this treasure trove of neighborhoods that include some of Hollywood's film
locations beginning as early as the silent film era. Don't be surprised, in
fact, if you come across a filming of some movie. We've worked on location with
film shoots, TV productions, and even worked in a film studios in Newport
Beach. Something about Newport Beach brings out the creative juices in
industry folks who make their money creating illusions.
Larger than life actors such as John Wayne
are remembered in Newport Beach with anniversary celebrations and even a boat,
the Wild Goose, that's a floating museum of memorabilia available for picture
taking on Hornblower Dinner Cruises around the Newport Beach bay and marina.
When you take pictures at Newport Beach,
the opportunities are endless. Summers bring out the handsome guys and really
cute girls with their straight hair or blonde curls. Two piers, boats in the
bay, sea lions, seals, dolphins offshore, surfers catching waves, body surfers
fearlessly challenging the elements and thousands of interesting images unveil
themselves to curious individuals seeking to capture this beautiful, magical
city out of an Impressionistic painting.
Some fun things to photograph include the
Balboa Island ferry boat, narrated cruises around the bay, the historic Balboa
Pavilion, surfers along the ocean front, boats in the bay on a typical Saturday
and the usual souvenir shots of family trips to the beach set to the backdrop of
the ocean and historic piers.
When you're busy taking pictures in Newport
Beach, just be sure during the daylight to watch that sunshine. It can be
pointing directly into your camera lens, washing out the entire image unless you
change your angle a bit. I recently wandered the Newport Beach beaches with
camera in hand, hoping to work on my own photo projects. What resulted instead,
was a helping hand I lent to over 10 tourist families who asked if I would use
their cameras to take a family memento picture for each of them. In every
case, I had to tell them that there photo would not turn out if I did what they
asked. Each wanted me to shoot directly into the sunlight on the beach. I think
one or two actually listened when I explained that by shifting your angle, you
can markedly improve your pictures (have to keep the explanations simple).
While sunlight can be your best friend (as opposed to no light), you have to
work with it and pay attention. Though it is really one of the basics of Newport
Beach picture taking, it's something most will encounter as they taking pictures
on the beach as the afternoon sun appears to drop closer to the horizon.
