Each year ‘grunion runs’ may be expected in the months of March, April, May, June, July, and August. However, it is legal to capture grunion only in the months of June, July, and August. To capture grunion, anyone 16 years or older must have a valid fishing license in their possession. It is illegal to capture grunion during the months of March, April, and May. These months are reserved for the continued breeding of the fish. Consult your local tide book for times and dates of expected grunion runs, or contact the Fish and Game at 909-597-9823. The Newport Beach Visitors Bureau at 722-1611 may also be able to assist you.
