You can hardly miss the Madonna Inn on Highway 101, near San Luis Obispo. The big pink sign might be a give away. Then, there's the bustle of cars and people usually visible from the freeway. What's the fuss all about? Driving by dozens of times, we never knew what was down there off the road. You don't have to stay at the Inn to enjoy it.  Several restaurants listed below and gift shops might make for an interesting pit stop. 

When staff from BEACHCALIFORNIA.COM stopped recently, there were many surprises on this hillside, meandering property overlooking scenic Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo County, not far from the city.  Animals grazed in large, grassy fields, the buildings were framed by mountains and hills, and water flowed from fountains set amidst the rocks.  Themed rooms, wagon wheels, stone facades and plenty of pink are a few of the attractions visitors expect when stopping here.  The day we explored, the rooms were booked and the restaurant had over a half hour wait to dine.  So we moved on, but some people interviewed absolutely loved the place and would stay only there. One woman described the decor as "overstated". 

Close to a shopping center, downtown San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, Avila Beach, wineries, missions and other attractions, Madonna Inn just might meet your specifications if you like things out of the ordinary.
