When Scottsdale entrepreneur John Leonesio started the company,
Massage Envy, in Scottsdale, AZ in 2001, he felt the marketing
concept was solid and sure to succeed. He believed that if you
offer the public massages at convenient times, with affordable
prices and professional service, you've overcome the obstacles
that have kept millions of consumers from becoming customers.
A sign in the window advertises a massage for $39. "These are
China prices," I said to the store manager at the new Massage
Envy that opened recently in Huntington Beach, recalling my trip
to China last year and the massages that many on our trip
enjoyed for around $50. He smiled, having heard the comment
about low prices many, many times. Whether you only try it once
or become hooked on massage treatments that then cost $59 for
one visit in a month, plus $39 for additional massages during
the same month, affordability is one of the top draws at Massage
Envy.
In Huntington Beach, massage salons have taken over rental
spaces that once were home to popular food chains such as Tony
Roma's. In an industry that's growing by leaps and bounds,
numerous massage businesses have opened in recent months but few
quite so rapidly as Massage Envy. Ranging in price from Massage
Envy's $39 introductory hour-long special to the Hyatt Regency
Huntington Beach Resort & Spa's $135 50-minute massage, one
offers convenience and value while the other offers luxury and
surroundings.
For the budget minded you get the same benefits in a mall
storefront with drop-in appointments till 10 p.m. most days.
Types of massages that licensed professionals offer include:
Swedish full-body massage designed to stimulate circulation
and provide an overall relaxing and stress relieving experience;
Deep Tissue slow and deep pressure strokes for chronic
patterns of tension in the body; Sports with protocols
designed specifically for individual sports; Reflexology
for reflex points on the feet and hands which have energetic
correlation to various parts of the body; Trigger Point
applies moderate pressure and hold for 30 seconds. After
releasing, the pain associated with these knots/points is
greatly reduced; Cranial Sacral: Gentle, non-invasive
holds on the head, spinal column and sacrum (tailbone) that
stretch and decompress these areas.
Massage Envy is expected to grow to 40 or 50 clinics in
