Lompoc, once the boom town for the
U.S. Space program, is back again, shining brighter than ever. With
property values soaring on the Central Coast, folks want to leave near
the beach and where better to live in the charming city of Lompoc. Once
known for its beautiful flower fields, the past several years have seen
a dramatic decline in flower crops. The Central Coast flower business
went south (to Mexico and South America) and though there are still some
flower crops for cut flowers, the amount is not the spectacular site
that drove people to the fields to view flowers in decades past.
The big event in town is still the
Flower Festival, however. This annual tradition would not be forsaken.
Local residents hold a parade, have a carnival and contests in Ryon
Park. They used to tie the event to flower field tours but those days
seem to be gone. The city near Vandenberg Base might have been chosen
as the primary launch port for the space program but it was not. It took
several decades for Lompoc to come into its own as a destination and
along the way, the city began to homogenize itself into the modern
landscape as more and more of the beautiful flower fields disappeared
and gave way to housing and more lucrative farm crops.
On a recent visit, we noticed yet,
another housing tract being built in Lompoc. Tourists can still enjoy
Lompoc's small town feel, however. Lompoc is an easily navigable place
and most things are within walking distance (except for the beach) from
the hotels.
Today, Lompoc is blooming into a
modern city that still looks west to Vandenberg as missile launches have
become a commercial venture on the base next door. For tourists, there
are lots of things to see and enjoy. Dozens of murals have taken over
the sides of buildings throughout the city. There's Ocean Park and the
beach, Mission La Purisima Concepcion which was voted as one of
California's most authentic missions, golf, shopping, weekly Farmer's
Market and weekly outdoor barbeques where you can buy tri-tip cooked
over oak wood. Our favorite hotel in Lompoc is the one pictured,
Embassy Suites.
