Limekiln State Park
The park features breathtaking views of
the Big Sur Coast, the beauty of the redwoods, the rugged coast and the
cultural history of limekilns. Co-managed with California Land Management,
the parks has 33 campsites. The park is 56 miles south of Carmel, off Highway
One; two miles south of Lucia. The weather can be changeable.
Layered clothing is advised.
Hike half a mile through fragrant
redwoods to four kiln towers, abutted by a stream. In the late 19th century,
these ovens supplied a thriving industry: Limestone was ‘‘cooked’’ out
of the rocks—a real stone soup—for use in building materials.
Limekiln State Park in the heart of
Big Sur is part of the California State Parks. Its redwood forests provide a
significant addition to the coast redwood inventory in the state park
system. Limekiln State Park is accessible from Highway 1 to Cone Peak and
Los Padres National Forest high country.
What's noticeable about this location is
the steep embankment in which Highway 1 road turns into a tall bridge
passing over tidelands where the Pacific Ocean washes upon the sand and
rocks near some camp sites. Some of the camp areas are fairly close together
but the ocean, trees and beautiful scenery make this state park a worthwhile
stop, even just for a picnic while passing through between San Simeon
(Hearst Castle) and Carmel.
