Nestled in the mountains to the east of
Santa Barbara lies
a water wonderland known as Cachuma Lake. Located in the San Marcos Pass
near the beautiful Los Padres National Forest, this Santa Barbara County Park
includes recreational fishing and boating plus RV camping. Sailboating,
water skiing and other contact water sports are not allowed on this lake, which
serves as a domestic water supply. Hiking trails are abundant and include easy
climbs and beautiful nature walks. Seasonal 2-hour lake cruises during winter
months include viewing of Bald Eagles (call 805-686-5050.)
When driving along the coastal
Highway 101 between northern
and southern California, you can easily miss the turn off for Highway 154
near Solvang on the northern side and the City of Santa Barbara on the south
side. The 154 exit is a windy, mountain road that bypasses the Gaviota Pass
and coastal ocean route.
If you stay on 101, you will see exits for three state
parks--Gaviota, Refugio and El Capitan. A free state operated rest center
with bathroom facilities is located at the base of the tunnel to Gaviota
Pass. The inland, scenic route of 154 also includes a rest stop that's more
rustic. You will find it via a road sign that marks a scenic overlook and
Damn.
Either choice is beautiful but many travelers opt for the
easier drive on the 101. The hilly drive on 154 includes many
stretches of two-lane highway with slower traffic and more challenging
driving conditions. Frequent travelers claim the drive can be a bit shorter
on 154 because the road actually shaves off approximately 10-15 miles.
Depending on traffic, however, the 101 can take equal time to drive because
it offers four easy-going lanes (two in each direction) that allow
faster cars to pass.
There are only a few places to take a peak at Cachuma Lake
as you drive 154. Road conditions and signs prohibit pulling over most of
the trek. If you turn into the park, there's a guard gate and booth manned
with staff that charge admission for cars, RVs and trucks with trailers and
boats. The park also includes a fun experience, camping in a yurt, a cross
between a tent and a teepee. Yurts are comfortable, self contained
units with doors that lock. They are often booked months ahead so you
should not count on showing up and renting one. For information on
renting a yurt or to obtain prices for admission and camping information,
