Laguna Beach dining
is the perfect outing. You can take a friend, a family member or even go by
yourself for a sun-kissed afternoon overlooking the deep blue Pacific Ocean.
With resort staff and food servers who are anything but pretentious, you'll
feel the charm of Southern (OC) style hospitality as you dine with the rich
and famous or ordinary folks in one of the finest view restaurants on the
coast.
The casual Mosaic Bar and Grill serves cool
iced tea or cocktails, salads, sandwiches, desserts and reasonable prices by
California Beach Resort standards. Compared to other multi-million dollar
view beach resort dining experiences in California such as
Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara or
Stillwater's Bar & Grill at The Lodge
overlooking Pebble Beach Golf Course, sculptured cliffs and rocky shores 38
miles north, Montage offers a restaurant you can return to time and again
without blowing your budget! (subject
to change).
Maria, the artist, and I ventured out for a
day in Laguna to immerse ourselves in the art scene Laguna Beach became
famous for 100 years ago. With four substantial art venues and the First
Thursday Art Walk on our plate, we had our work cut out for us. We looked at
the menu and placed our names on a list for a 25 minute wait. Half an hour
provided just enough time to explore the resort grounds and walk down to the
beach for a quick look at the coastline.
Set upon a cliff, the hotel offers several
sets of stairs and ramps to uncrowded beaches with some natural structures
creating tucked-away coves and privacy guests seemed to enjoy.
I was so proud of Maria, who had recently
obtained an art degree while working full time, that I stole her away from
he job for a day of fun. She was a marketing expert at a nearby resort, the
Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach, but seldom had time to
venture out to surrounding hotel properties. The delightful thing about
being around her wasn't her knowledge of art on this targeted trip or her
familiarity with resorts, it was the fact that she's British.
Maria and I both ordered and loved the same
meal, the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich with Grilled Pineapple, served with
Vegetable Slaw and Thyme Fries or Salad. Other great choices on the menu
included Crispy Dungeness Crab Cakes with Mango Papaya Salsa and Cajun
Remoulade; Herb Encrusted Seared Ahi Tuna; Tempura Battered Chicken Strips
with Spiced Honey Mustard; New York Steak Cobb Salad accented with AppleWood-Smoked
Bacon, Maytag Blue Cheese and topped with a Spanish Sherry Vinaigrette;
Maine Lobster Salad; Grilled Halibut Tacos; Balsamic-Marinated Roasted
Chicken Breast Sandwich with Fire-Roasted Red Pepper, Arugula, Heirloom
Tomatoes, Basil Aioli on Parmesan Focaccia and many other delicious
creations. Prices for items large enough to satisfy the average diner ranged
from $15 to $30.
Luxurious perfect weather and the prospects
for an afternoon and evening of art enjoyed in a setting that truly inspires
made this enchanting day as memorable as perfection.
