beach swings
In search of the kids
vacation, Torrance Beach in Torrance, California, offers an intimate beach that
sits at the south end of the South Bay. Abutting a mountain where Rancho
Palos Verdes is perched, this sandy cove feels like a neighborhood park―maybe
because the single family dwellings' back yards face the beach. Sweet!
On the day we visited this
easy-going beach location, students from a local high school were sketching the
waves or writing in journals, part of an outdoor assignment, one told us. Moms
were swinging kids in the tiny tot swings, couples strolled hand in hand, teen
surfers rinsed off the salt water after a workout and joggers and bicyclists
zipped by, sweating.
Such is life at Torrance
Beach, a place known to locals and those who explore beyond the big shiny pier
with all its intoxicating fried food smells at Redondo Beach. Redondo Beach Pier
and King's Harbor beckon as the big attractions. A marina with boats, jet skis,
kayaks and lots to do and see attract visitors looking for something to do. At
the pier are restaurants with ocean views, shops and free fishing that's
available at every California pier.
Back on land Redondo Beach
also has a playground in a grassy park. There are usually more children gathered
there than south in the distance at Torrance Beach. While Torrance offers
some excellent hotels that are suited to a business clientele, family travelers
and budget stays, there are none at the beach in Torrance. Redondo Beach,
however, features at least one property,
Portofino
Hotel & Yacht Club, 260 Portofino Way
at the beach. Across the street are two hotels,
Best Western
Sunrise At Redondo Beach Marina, 400 North Harbor Drive,
and
Crowne Plaza
Hotel Redondo Beach & Marina,Ca, 300 N. Harbor Dr.,
that both include beach close, family fun.
The Crowne Plaza offers more amenities than Best West, which is framed by the
Redondo Beach power generating station. You can't escape this monster in the
South Bay. It's at the beach, providing electricity for the population here. One
nice touch to the plant is a Wyland whale mural for kids to enjoy.
Torrance Beach is the perfect choice when you stay in Redondo Beach for laid
back, low stress beaches. Redondo Beach is usually more active because of the
many restaurants and shops. But for family fun where little ones can enjoy
swings on the beach, head to Torrance Beach, which is accessible at 387 Paseo de
la Playa, Torrance, California
