Photos of
West Jetty View Park & The Wedge -on the tip of Balboa Peninsula, at the end of
Channel Road in Balboa. Free parking lot. Open: 6 am to 10 pm. Facilities:
None.
West Jetty View Park is
comprised of a lush, grassy lawn that fronts the bay atop the rock formations
that create the jetty. With small picnic tables overlooking the famous Wedge to
the north and Corona del Mar's Pirates Cove to the south, this interesting
little park garners an incredible amount of foot traffic, most likely because of
the famous Wedge body surfing location.
In addition to the Wedge
extreme sports activity, there's a huge expanse of public beaches all lined with
houses that run the entire several-mile distance along the Newport Beach
peninsula, ending at West Jetty View Park. Park benches, rocks to climb, sandy
beaches and the jetty that juts into the ocean, popular with fishermen, offer
many contrasting landscapes in one place. From green lawns to rock islands, sand
beaches to expansive blue oceans overlooking Catalina Island, the scenery is
eye-catching. Even though street parking is limited and may require a walk,
tourists find it worth the effort to stand at the very tip of the Balboa
peninsula and watch the sailboats, fishing boats and private yachts head out to
sea.
The park and adjacent beach
do not offer restroom facilities, but in the distance you can see the Balboa
Pier. That's where you'll find public restrooms, restaurants, clothing stores
and even a hotel, Balboa Inn.
Operated by the City of Newport Beach, West
Jetty View Park is located at Ocean Blvd. and Channel Road, Newport Beach
No reservations for parties and special events are available at this tiny park
that contains 8 benches, a water fountain and a cement walkway leading to the
beach.
