Imperial Beach has a long history as a vacation town and continues to hold that distinction. With a beautiful pier, a lovely beach,  picnic areas and a basketball court, there's a small town feel and less crowds than many beaches to the north.  Once a year, however, a sandcastle competition comes to town and hotels such as the Seacoast Inn are booked months in advance of this festival which attracts thousands of people.

 We love this region of San Diego and recommend when you stay here that you drive a few miles south to Border Field State Park and beach. It's where our warmest California beaches begin with a see-through fence dividing the United States and Mexico. What's surprising is that when you look at the crest of the hills of Fuentes del Mar on the Mexico side, you'll see some very fine houses.  With outlet shops on the U.S. side of the border, also enjoy the view of an incredibly huge flag of Mexico waving in the wind across the fence.
