View of the Huntington Beach sunset
from Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach
Resort, Hilton Waterfront,
Shorebreak Hotel and Best Western
Huntington Beach Inn.
Huntington Beach, Calif.--
Four hotels all share the love (and
views) of the huge sun dropping down
into the Pacific Ocean. Sure, you
can watch the sights from your hotel
room, but since you booked the trip,
why not get out and grab it
first-hand? In the photo above a
couple sits on a bank of sand next
to a lifeguard tower shuttered for
the night. This is the ideal time
(around sunset) to take a stroll on
the beach and cuddle up for nature's
top show of the day and its final
act--the evening curtain call.
Four hotels that access the
Huntington City Beach offer various
views, but all face this same ocean,
same sunset, and they all capture
the same magic.
From south to north the hotels drop
in price, one to the next (subject
to change, like anything).
Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa on
the south end of the pier has the
walkbridge that allows you to go to
the beach without meeting an ounce
of traffic. The other three hotels
require actually pushing the
crosswalk button and waiting for the
cars to come to a stop to access the
beach. Hyatt is the only 500+ room
resort in the city of Huntington
Beach and boasts some of the most
meeting space along this portion of
the Southern California coast.
Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort,
the 2nd hotel that's also located on
the south side of the HB Pier,
sometimes charges the same as its
next door neighbor Hyatt. But
usually the prices are less. The
hotels are both owned by the Mayer
Corp., but they act like they
compete, though they really work
together when the Hyatt has overflow
or vice versa.
Third and newest of the four hotels
in downtown HB is the
Shorebreak, a Joie de Vivre
boutique surfer-themed hotel. The
rooms are compact and the pier is
within view. This hotel holds strong
appeal to youth and young audience
seeking action, vibration, and
elation. It is in the heart of
downtown and is probably the most
active of the hotels in terms of its
closeness to the street, shops and
eats. The Shorebreak is located on
the north side of the pier. (Isn't
it funny how everything is mapped in
pier distance?)
Fourth is the
Best Western Huntington Beach Inn.
You normally should find the lowest
prices on rooms at this hotel of all
four mentioned. It is the furthest
north, though still only about half
a mile from the furthest south. Best
Western is the budget hotel of all
four, featuring a two to three
diamond rating that used to be
popular back in the old days. You're
less likely to see the plush linens
and dream beds in this property, but
it has served travelers faithfully
and does sell out sometimes because
of the price points.
Whether you spend a little or a lot,
stay north or south of the pier, and
come for a day or a month,
Huntington Beach sunsets are what
make the place so hard to leave!
