Redondo Beach
has always been a tourist destination. But, the city is beginning to redefine itself as a vacation spot, adding new marketing efforts to promote what locals know about and cherish. Often used in films and television shows, the city's beautiful beaches and wharf make for great pictures, but also for fun activities and things to see on a visit. Throughout the year there's a full calendar of events ranging from a fun run in the spring, to an event to celebrate nearly every holiday and season. For tourists, the fun is just showing up and enjoying the vibrant South Bay city not far from Los Angeles International Airport and other famous beaches--Venice and Santa Monica.
Some of Redondo's star attractions are its beaches, shopping and dining, all accessible on foot. A paved bike path is in constant motion in this health-conscious city where an exercise gym overlooks the beach, a winter Seaside Ice rink entertains while providing exercise, and the beach and paths provide all you need to get moving. You will not be alone if you decide to take a jog, ride your roller blades, or hop on a bicycle in Redondo Beach. Redondo Beach has a long and esteemed history of surfing, volleyball and water sports, too.
For visitors who want to see the highlights, we always like to cruise by the huge Wyland Whaling wall on the AES power plant next to the beach. The mural is massive and very cool. Then there's King's Wharf. Take a stroll to see the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean. In December the local yacht club hosts a lighted boat parade that is quite spectacular.
Redondo Beach Pier and its unique architecture exudes the Classic California cool vibes, and the pier people provide activities all year long. From free summer concerts to car shows, a chalk festival and Halloween celebrating, the pier is the center for fun. And like all California piers, free fishing is available any time of year.
The waterfront of Redondo Beach offers many restaurants serving spectacular views. For casual fair, you might want to try Ruby's Diner, or something like a hotdog on a stick with a lemonade. For romantic sunsets and a great menu of fresh fish, salads, steaks, pasta, and a full cocktail bar, check out the Chart House, right on the waterfront. You can't beat it for a date, or special dining treat.
Where to stay? Several stand-outs are our obvious choices, though may not suit the budget of just everyone. We like Portofino best. It sits on a harbor and with its renovations not long ago, it offers the most luxurious hotel accommodations on this part of the coast. The largest property overlooking the harbor and ocean is a Crowne Plaza, ideal for most any type of stay. And there's a Best Western across the street from the beach, as well. Those three hotels are our best bets, mainly because they're on the waterfront. But there are other budget to affordable hotels you can enjoy. Just don't hesitate to visit and check out this fantastic seaside playground. It is well worth the time and money.
